Channels Overview
Channels are the bridge between your AI agent and the messaging platforms your users already use. When you connect a channel, OpenClaw listens for incoming messages on that platform and routes them to your AI agent for processing. The agent's response is then sent back through the same channel.
Supported Channels
OpenClaw supports the following messaging platforms:
| Channel | Type | What You Need |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | Bot API | Bot token from @BotFather |
| Discord | Bot | Bot token from Developer Portal |
| Slack | Socket Mode | Bot token + App-level token |
| Web | QR code scan from your phone | |
| Signal | CLI | Signal account linked via CLI |
All channels are available on every plan. You can connect multiple channels simultaneously -- your agent will respond on whichever platform a user messages from.
How It Works
- You create credentials on the messaging platform (e.g., a Telegram bot token).
- You paste those credentials into your OpenClaw Dashboard under Instance > Channels.
- OpenClaw connects to the platform and starts listening for messages.
- When a message arrives, your AI agent processes it and replies on the same platform.
DM Policy
OpenClaw uses a DM Policy to control who can interact with your agent. There are two modes:
Pairing Mode (Default)
In pairing mode, a new user must be approved before the agent responds to them. This is the recommended setting for most use cases. When someone messages your bot for the first time, the conversation is held until you approve it from the dashboard or CLI.
Pairing mode prevents unauthorized users from consuming your AI provider credits. Keep it enabled unless you specifically want an open bot.
Open Mode
In open mode, the agent responds to anyone who messages it. This is useful for public-facing bots where you want zero friction, but be aware that anyone can trigger API calls to your AI provider.
Open mode means anyone can interact with your agent and use your AI credits. Monitor your usage closely if you enable this.
Connecting a Channel
Every channel follows the same general flow:
- Get credentials from the messaging platform (bot token, API key, etc.).
- Open your Dashboard at openclawhost.co.
- Navigate to Instance > Channels.
- Select the channel you want to connect.
- Paste your credentials and click Connect.
